Obama pays tribute to Mandela

President Obama
United States President Barack Obama, on Saturday paid tributes ailing former President Nelson Mandela, and met with the family of the anti-apartheid hero, as part of his a three-day visit to South Africa, with his wife Michelle.
South African Government News Agency reports that Obama, who will not visit Mandela, had a telephone conversation with Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, who is with the elderly statesman in hospital.
In statement issued after the telephone conversation, Machel said she had drawn strength from the support of the Obamas.
“Having taken the time to telephone me to express their solidarity and meet our children, they have added a touch of personal warmth that is characteristic of the Obama family. I am humbled by their comfort and messages of strength and inspiration, which I have already conveyed to Madiba,” said Machel.
Obama was quoted as saying, “The triumph of Mandela speaks of something deep in the human spirit,” adding that Mandela was an inspiration to the world and held the “power of principle” for standing up for what is right.
He added that Mandela understood that the wellbeing of the country was more important than anyone’s personal interest.
President Jacob Zuma and Obama, in a press briefing after holding bilateral talks at the Union Buildings, reflected on Mandela’s legacy.
Zuma used the platform to update the world on Mandiba’s condition.
He said “he remains critical but is now stable” and that the world should continue to pray for his good health.”
Zuma expressed hope that the world icon would be discharged soon.
He said Mandela was being treated by the best doctors, who were doing everything to help him.
Obama also visited Soweto, where he urged African youth to use Mandela as a “model for political leadership,” adding that the future of the continent were in the hands of young people.
AFP reports that Obama was greeted with wild enthusiasm by the crowd in Soweto, who sang South African protest songs before he arrived and chanted his “Yes We Can” campaign slogan when he took the stage.
However, protesters set fire to US flags and portraits of Obama and at least three bangs from stun grenades were heard as armed police tried to move demonstrators away from the university.
“The message is clear. We want him to honour the promises he made when he became president, including things like the closing of Guantanamo Bay,” 30-year-old Firoz Osman told AFP.

Jonathan, Amaechi meet in Rivers

President Goodluck Jonathan with Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, at Port Harcourt International Airport on Saturday.
BARELY 72 hours after the Rivers State Governor and the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was barred from exchanging  pleasantries with President Goodluck Jonathan, the duo met at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Saturday and embraced each other.
Jonathan met and shook hands with Amaechi at the airport before departing for Abuja after visiting his hometown in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Though no public speech was made, both Jonathan and the governor, exchanged pleasantries before the President eventually departed for the nation’s capital.
Neither the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari nor the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. David Iyofor, picked their calls. They did not also respond to the text messages sent to them asking for the details of the discussion between the duo
But the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, told one of our correspondents that   Amaechi was at the airport to see the President off according to protocol, adding that there was nothing unusual about it.
Abati said protocol required that when the President is in a state, the governor or his deputy should receive him and see him off.
He added that since the President passes through Port Harcourt anytime he is going to Bayelsa State or returning from there, it was expected that Amaechi or his deputy should receive or see him off.
When asked whether the development was an indication that the face-off between the President and the governor was over, the presidential spokesman said there was no rift between the two of them in the first place.
He said, “Governor Amaechi was at the airport to see the President off. There is nothing unusual about that.
“It is the duty of a state governor to receive and see the President off when he visits a state. In the event that the governor is not available, the deputy governor carries out the task. This is part of protocol.
“In this case, anytime the President is visiting Bayelsa State, he passes through Port Harcourt and the governor receives or sees him off. There is no rift between the President and the governor in the first place.”
The governor has been having a running battle with the President in what many believe is part of the build up to the 2015 elections.
The frosty relationship between Amaechi and Jonathan climaxed when the Rivers governor contested and won the Nigeria Governors’ Forum election despite a warning from the Peoples Democratic Party that Amaechi should not contest the election.
The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party later suspended Amaechi from the party citing a petition written by the Rivers State chapter of the party against the governor for violating some sections of the party’s constitution.

JTF smashes Boko Haram group

Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen Azubuike Ihejirika
The Joint Task Force in Yobe said on Saturday that it had smashed a Boko haram group in Fune, recovering two vehicles, arms, ammunition and other materials.
JTF spokesman, Lt. Lazarus Eli, said this in Damaturu while displaying the items to newsmen, News Agency of Nigeriareports.
He explained that the terrorists attacked a JTF checkpoint in Fune on Friday and took away a police vehicle conveying some items to Borno State.
“The JTF pursued and engaged them in a gunfight and they were overpowered. We recovered the stolen vehicle as well as a similar one used by the group.
“Other items recovered include one Ak47 rifle, three Rocket Propelled Gun bombs, three RPG chargers, one riot gun and 485 rounds of ammunition,” Eli said.
Lazarus also said 42 police jackets, 44 police helmets, six AK47 rifle magazines, 80 fragmentation blades and illicit drugs were recovered.
He said some of the suspects fled with gunshots and appealed to the public to report anyone found with gun wounds to security operatives.
Meanwhile, the people of the state have appealed to the federal authorities to lift the suspension of telephone services, to enable them provide security operatives with useful and timely information.
Damaturu residents claimed that the attack on a college two weeks ago would have been averted, if there was telephone service.
“People noticed suspicious movements on that fateful day just about the commencement of the curfew, but one could not move out.
“Also, there was no telephone network for us to report to the security,” a source stated.

Celebrity baby mamas, daddies

Bisi Ibidapo-Obe

In the last few months, there has been a negative trend on the Nigerian entertainment scene. Various artistes have been in the news over paternity or maternity issues. Celebrities are often times mentors to lots of people without knowing it. These people tend to emulate their lifestyles, whether they are acceptable or not. It is for this reason celebs are always advised to get their acts together because they never know who is watching. Saturday Beatshighlights some of the acts that have been in the news over baby mama/daddy drama in the industry
Bisi Ibidapo-Obe
The paternity tussle between actress, Bisi Ibidapo-Obe, and former House of Representatives member, Dino Melaye, was a trending issue for months. While the actress stuck to her gun that the lawmaker was the father of her child, the married lawmaker with three kids denied the claims. The issue of DNA came up but when the pictures of her baby girl surfaced on the Internet, people made judgments in their mind. The baby girl is some months old now while her mother has since found love and obviously moved on with her life.
Liz Da Silva
Just few weeks ago, various news portals reported that the up and coming sexy actress, Liz Da Silva, who held her baby shower in May in Lagos, is not sure who is responsible for her pregnancy. At least three men were said to have been intimately involved with her, but the actress allegedly doesn’t know who the father of the child is. News about her dilemma is slowly simmering down and she is fast adjusting to being a single mother. During the week, the screen diva did her child dedication.
Laide Bakare
The light-skinned actress welcomed her baby boy into the world on May 3 in New York. Not too long after, her estranged first husband, Olumide Okunfulure, claimed to be the ‘baby-daddy’. The twist in this story is that Laide Bakare is married to another man, Tunde Oriowo, but her first husband, Okunfulure, is claiming he was still married to her when she got pregnant and quit their marriage without letting him know. However, the actress, few days ago, named her son ‘Oriowo’. Some days ago, she also hit back at her former husband, saying she was fully aware that her baby was the result of her liaison with her new man.
P-square
Just a few weeks after welcoming his first new born baby in Atlanta, Paul Okoye, the other half of the singing duo, P-Square, had another baby delivered for him in a London hospital by a former beauty pageant contestant, Elshama Benson. However, Paul has refused to claim paternal responsibility for the baby boy. Although the new mother had been in touch with the singer, he had not been forthcoming beyond telling her that he wants a DNA test to ascertain paternity. Elshama claims she never slept with any man except Paul, adding that she lost her virginity to him when she was 17 years old. Hard to believe, Elshama was a close friend to Anita, the other woman who gave birth to Paul’s first son.

I don’t feel anything special for MI – Starlet singer, Lami Phillips

Starlet singer, Lami Phillips

Soul singer, Lami Phillips, tells Ademola Olonilua about her life and work
Why I have been away for a while
It was deliberate. We did not expect the first album to do well; we did not expect to be recognised. I always use ‘we’ because I’m in a team. We found ourselves shooting the videos and I’m really grateful for that but somewhere along the line, I realised I was losing focus. I started getting streamlined into hip-hop. More importantly, I might be wrong, but I feel that I was one of the first persons to do the type of music I’m doing in Nigeria. I call it soul; some call it afro-soul or phunk-soul. There are more people doing it now, but then I was a lone ranger. So I thought if I was going to do it, I needed to lean back. Now I’m working on the next album, people have their expectation of what they are supposed to be listening to, so I needed to take a break. It just went too fast, after the first album, everything went too fast. I saw myself travelling a lot and always in the studio or always at a shoot and always having all these events to go for. I needed to click ‘refresh’, leave the country and be inspired for the next album.

Coping in a male-dominated industry
A lot of time we do not want to say the truth, we don’t want to say it is hard, but the truth is that it is hard. It is hard being a female in the industry and it is 10 times harder doing the kind of songs that I do. It is even impossible for you if you refuse to remove your clothes in your video and do the ‘shake your bum bum’ routine. I just stay focused.
Semi-nude women in music videos
I blame the women, not the men. In most of those videos, the men are fully dressed. They are always really fully dressed even with jackets and they keep shaking and shaking it. I’m not trying to be morally superior, but we need to be very careful as women to give good examples. If you tune in to any music video channel, four out of five videos, they look the same. They are in the club, the women are naked and the men are telling them to shake their butts. It is a bit played out if you are at a pool party or it’s a birthday at the beach or if the concept requires it which is what they do in western videos. They listen to the song and then they work according to the concept. It doesn’t always have to look like that. If the video requires something like that, fine. Shout out to Timaya. If it is every time, the songs sound the same, for me it is boring.
Sticking to my kind of music
I think about it, switching like Iyanya did. It is not because I’m stubborn or I have a point to prove. If I was a hip-hop head, if that was my talent, I would do it. I wouldn’t think about it because my life is not about pleasing people. I just have to be happy and please myself. That is not who I am. I am not a hip-hop head. I am a music head. So if I do soul, there is a hint of hip-hop in it like if you listen to ‘Orimi wu’. The rap before the song is a little bit of hip-hop. If you listen to the stuff I did for the first album, there is a bit of hip-hop in it too. I do get crazy when I’m spending time with some of my music friends, I can lean that way. Also, when I’m doing a chorus for somebody else, I can lean that way. At my core, that is not who I am. At the end of the day, you cannot give what you do not have.
About my song with MI
I wonder why people say we had a good chemistry. It made me laugh. I did not live here all my life and I’m used to seeing maybe Madonna and Justin Timberlake in a video and nobody is thinking about the chemistry. All they are saying is that this is a very good video. I think that was the first time that Nigerians would see that kind of a video, especially with a rapper. They were used to seeing MI do the hardcore rap. I don’t think it was about the chemistry, I think it was because it was something new. I think Nigerians need a love story but, unfortunately, it is not here. It did not even come to mind.
Travelling a lot as a kid
I grew up in America, Nigeria and Europe. My parents were the reason I travelled a lot as a kid. My dad used to work in an oil company, so they moved him around a lot. Some of us were born there, so we started off there. Then we came to Nigeria, when it was time for me to finish high school, he felt it was better for me to finish there so I finished in the UK.
Most romantic thing a guy has done for me
What I consider as romantic is not what most girls today see as romantic. It is the little thing that matters to me. To give an example, a long time ago, when I was in high school, a guy wanted to date me and I did not like him. I was not feeling well and he realised that my friends and I wanted to go out. He sent a car to pick us and take us to an amusement park, everything all thought out. It was nice. It was a good gesture, but it is not the kind of things that get to somebody like me. Things that get to me are remembering the little things that I don’t think you are paying attention to. For instance, maybe you take me on a date and I order for something. The next time I go on a date with you, you remember what I ordered, it shows that you are paying attention. It is not the flashy things that get to me because those things can come and go. It does not really show the kind of person the person is. If you are really into somebody, you’ll pay attention to the person. You’ll ask questions more than you talk. I don’t like self involved people. I don’t like people who think they are too fine or too cool.
My love life
I’m in a relationship. He is awesome. I’m a tough nut to crack. He got to me because he is God-fearing, funny and humble. He tells it to me straight without being afraid to do so. He is hardworking.
What I don’t like about him
He happens to be right a lot. I’m a stubborn person, so this doesn’t work for me. When you are arguing, you need to feel that you have points. But most of the times, he is right; so that pisses me off.
How it happened between us
When I met him, I knew he is a good guy. There are not many good guys anymore; there are not many good people anymore. I knew he was a good guy and I liked him. He is handsome and funny. He did something funny that caught my attention; he was dancing in a most obscure way so that was how I noticed him. He then turned around and I realised he was good looking and that helped. We were somewhere and he was dancing, I did not know him and he did not know me. He was dancing like a mad man and people were laughing so I wondered who he was. When he turned around, he greeted me and I greeted him back. It was his birthday. I like food so he gave me cake. The cake was sweet and it is always a good way to start a conversation.
My current project
We just put out a video for ‘Titi lailai’; that is a song that I did with Femi Tones. He has worked with people like Amy Winehouse and George Benson and other famous people. That is what I was doing in London. The video is out and getting good reviews. I have a single out, ‘Romantic voice’, featuring K9, it is getting a lot of airplay on radio stations. The next thing is working on the video and the next single. We also have an acoustic session with Lami where every week I go into the studio and I do different old songs. Last week, we did Lauren Hills’s X-factor and John Legend’s,’ Ordinary peopl’.
