Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday accused former Enugu State Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, of withholding his traveling passport since he last obtained court’s permission to travel abroad for treatment in April 2012.
A Federal High Court, Lagos had ordered the seizure of the travelling passports of Nnamani and his co-accused in the N4.5bnmoney laundering charges preferred against them after they were first arraigned and granted bail in 2007.
The anti-graft agency’s counsel, Mr. Kelvin Uzozie, made the allegation while urging Justice Mohmmed Yinusa, who now presides over the case, to dismiss Nnamani’s fresh application to travel to the United States of America for treatment.
Uzozie did not inform the court of any steps EFCC had made to ensure the passport was returned to appropriate authorities ever since the former governor returned to Nigeria.
“He never returned the passport. There is evidence that he returned it in 2008 and 2009. But there is no evidence that he returned it the last time he was granted leave to travel abroad. He has not returned his passport, yet he wants the court to exercise discretion in his favour,” Uzozie said.
